The Old Bailey
The two Sheriffs of the City of London reside at the Central Criminal Court in Old Bailey, London EC4M 7EH during their year of service, so that one of them can always be attendant on the judges. In Court No 1 the principal chairs on the bench are reserved for their and the Lord Mayor's use, with the Sword of the City hanging behind the bench. It is an invariable custom that the Lord Mayor of London must previously have served as a Sheriff.
The Sheriffs support the Sheriffs' and Recorder's Fund which is aimed at helping the rehabilitation of offenders and assisting them back into employment. Working with the Probation Service and other Social Welfare agencies, the fund is able to offer small, practical grants, focussed in areas of training, clothing, furniture and assistance to the young families of offenders.
